It’s Volunteer Appreciation Week. The work of the CLC, especially the stewardship required to care for our conserved lands and waters, would not be possible without the support of dozens of volunteers. Many thanks to all of you!
In honor of Volunteer Appreciation Week, we’re sharing here a late winter report from trail stewards Jim and Maureen Diamond (report by Maureen, all photos by Jim). Jim and Maureen have adopted the trails in the Charlotte C. Browne Woods and they check on them every quarter or so and send a brief report—always fun to read our stewards’ observations about the natural world! If you would like to be a trail steward, contact Lynne at lflaccus@chocorualake.org or 603-323-6252.
Jim and I snowshoed through C. Browne Woods today. The trails were quite passable. Wintry twigs on the path at places, but no significant barriers. The two pools are on the edge of the meadow as the path enters the woods. The fallen tree that I’m touching with my mitten is on the first section of the trail, before it bears right and becomes slightly steeper downhill on the approach to the river.
This visit was overdue, as our last time in these woods was over 4 months ago. But things looked good. There were some fading XC ski tracks from the meadow to the lowest point in the woods. We couldn’t detect any major animal tracks because of recent temperature changes. There was one nice deposit of deer scat as we were on the last quarter of our usual counter-clockwise circuit through the woods.
