It’s loon nesting season! CLC is partnering with the Loon Preservation Committee in Moultonboro, NH, on loon conservation and protection efforts in Chocorua Lake.
Most years, loons nest somewhere on Chocorua Lake, and life is not easy for loons in New Hampshire at this time. Please join us in doing all we can to protect these stunning, magical birds and support their thriving. Lakes are not the same without that wild call echoing across the water of an evening.
Ways you can help:
Be an ethical loon observer.
To best observe loons, use binoculars or a spotting scope from at least 200 feet in distance. If you would like to photograph loons, please do so only with a telephoto lens. If you are not using a telephoto lens to photograph a loon or a nest you are too close.
Be an ethical angler.
Never cast or fish near loons or the nest site. Dispose properly of all monofilament fishing lines. Do not use lead sinkers or jigs: use no-lead alternatives.
Be a responsible boater.
Never chase loons or chicks and stay at a minimum of 200 feet away from the nesting site with your canoe, kayak, or paddleboard. Pursuing a loon or getting too close can be considered harassment and loons are migratory birds which are protected under the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act.*
Be a responsible pet owner.
Protect loons from your pets. Keep dogs and cats away from loons and nests.
*Also, it is most important to note that loons are a threatened species in New Hampshire and are protected by State and federal laws from hunting or harassment, including following adult loons with chicks or getting too close to a nest site. If you observe harassment of loons, you may contact the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department at (603) 271-3421 or Marine Patrol at (603) 293-2037 for assistance.
